S.W.A.T. (an acronym for Special Weapons and Tactics) teams are specialized groups of Law Enforcement officers trained to resolve threats that normal Police are not equipped to handle. In the Matrix, they serve as forces of bluepill humans that assist and serve as enforcers for the Agents.
In The Real World
S.W.A.T. teams were elite groups of police officers trained to resolve high-risk incidents that exceeded the capabilities of conventional police. They were armed with special weapons not normally used by regular police units, such as assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns and sniper rifles.
In The Matrix
A S.W.A.T. team in The Matrix.
A S.W.A.T. team assists Agents Smith, Brown and Jones in the Hotel Ambush and capturing Morpheus. One S.W.A.T. team succeeds in killing Mouse, while another breaks in through the ground floor in order to capture the rest of the Nebuchadnezzar's crew. Agent Smith possesses one of the officers in order to attack Neo. After defeating Morpheus, Smith orders the S.W.A.T. team to restrain Morpheus and bring him in for interrogation, where Soldiers escorts Morpheus to a Military-Controlled building. The S.W.A.T. team also succeeds in capturing Cypher, however, he manages to cause a car crash which allows him to get to an Exit. The officer Smith possessed would later be killed during Neo and Trinity's raid on the Military-Controlled building in order to rescue Morpheus, after Neo shot Smith with a minigun on a helicopter.
The S.W.A.T. team in the Hotel Ambush wear sold black BDUs, armored gaiters, black leather combat boots, black Kevlar helmets with protective goggles, black balaclavas, and body armor with "POLICE" in white letters on the front.
All the S.W.A.T. team officers are armed with Australian-made Australian Automatic Arms SAC carbines with 10.5-inch barrels, and are fitted with a custom-made forearm designed to hold both a tactical flashlight and laser sight. They also use nightsticks, similarly to the Police Officers and Security Guards.

A Police S.W.A.T. team first appears in the opening scene set in Neo's Modal, in which they re-enact the attempt to apprehend Trinity. They next appear during Morpheus's attempt to get Neo to take a red pill, in which they storm Deus Machina. They then appear chasing after Neo and the Mnemosyne's crew after Bug's and Morpheus successfully convince Neo to take a red pill. They use helmets with goggles, black body armor with a "S.W.A.T." patch on the back, black shirts with "S.W.A.T." printed on the sleeves, and black pants and boots.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) S.W.A.T. officers also appear in the film. They first appear, alongside F.B.I. agents, at Simulatte during The Analyst's attempt to get Neo to re-enter his pod. They wear similar clothing to the Police S.W.A.T. teams, however they wear a green shirt instead of a black one, and do not wear goggles on top of their helmets.
Both the Police and F.B.I. S.W.A.T. utilize Heckler & Koch HK416D rifles fitted with red dot sights and laser designators, as well as M4A1 carbines with reflex optics, railed handguards and vertical forward grips. One Police S.W.A.T. officer in the Matrix can also be seen firing what appears to be a Milkor MGL launcher.

Trivia
- It appears that, in the first film, the Military Soldiers and S.W.A.T. have some affiliation between each other, as the helicopter which Kim is seen piloting later in the film can be heard in the Hotel Ambush scene, and Soldiers can be seen escorting Morpheus into the Military-controlled building later in the film, alongside Agent Jones.
- S.W.A.T. are commonly mistaken for the Soldiers in the Lobby Shooting Spree scene in the first film.
- Additionally, S.W.A.T. officers can be seen in The Matrix: Path of Neo, wearing the same outfits seen worn by the Soldiers in the first film. They also replace the Soldiers as enemies in the "Lobby Shooting Spree" level.
- S.W.A.T. are commonly mistaken for the Soldiers in the Lobby Shooting Spree scene in the first film.
- In the Hotel Ambush scene, the S.W.A.T. officer who investigates the bathroom after hearing Cypher cough is shown using a assault rifle that has both a standard tactical light fitted into the forearm on the right side of the weapon, and an additional, much brighter torch that is fitted to the left side and secured with electrical tape wrapped around the barrel and forearm.
